Basic SEO Techniques - Part One

The following describes basic SEO techniques for each of your html pages. Each of the following techniques should be used on each page of your website. This is not always possible with some of the open source packages that are out there that use a header and footer, but you can still use the techniques for the header which will be carried across each of your pages using that method. 1. Insert keywords within the title Meta tag so that search engine will know what your page is about. The title tag is located right at the top of your html document within the head tags. Inserting a keyword or key phrase will improve your chances of bringing targeted traffic to your site. If you happen to have a target market for example and you only sell to areas in California then you might want to have the City and State in the Meta title tag as well. Make sure that the title tag contains text which is user friendly. The text within the title tag is what shows up in a search result. This is the banner of text located in the upper left hand corner of the web browser 2. Use the same keywords that you have in your Meta keyword statement also in your anchor text to link to the different pages on your site. This is useful if your site contains many pages. Use descriptive phrases which also include some of you keywords. 3. Make sure that the text within the title tag is also within the body of the page. Adding the exact same text on the page for your h1 tag will let the reader who clicks on your page from a search engine result that they have clicked on the correct link and have the correct landing page. Sprinkle your keywords throughout your article. The most important keywords can be hi-lited. 4. Do not use the exact same title tag on every page on your website. Use the headline of the page as the title tag to help the robots know exactly what page they are on. A good place to insert the headline is within the h1 tag. So the headline is the same as the title tag text. 5. The Meta tag content should be used for describing what you site is all about, so that the end user gains a sense of exactly what products or services that you're providing. A Twenty to thirty word description with keywords intermixed. Do not spam the description or keyword Meta tag by stuffing meaningless keywords into these tags. 6. Commit yourself to the process. SEO isn't a one-time event. Search engine algorithms change regularly, so the tactics that worked last year may not work this year. SEO requires a long-term commitment.
