While many may see SEO or search engine optimisation as a quick fix those who work in the industry understand that any process will require a lengthy and time consuming effort. Naturally all of those people embarking upon a SEO journey have the ultimate objective of achieving top listings in search genies such as Google. However, getting to the top is not easy, it is only through a detailed understanding of how search engines work, and how to work with them will a page one, rank one be achievable. Any SEO specialist will tell you that if you wish to take a path without scruples it is possible to achieve rankings in a short space of time. The problem with following this path is that the methods of optimisation are deemed as unethical by the majority of search engines; the result is that eventually the powers that be will pick up these methods. If the search engines feel that your SEO methods are unethical, or 'black hat' there are a number of penalties that will be put in place. Of these penalties demotion in the rankings and complete exclusion from search engine listings are the most extreme. However, for a site to lose their rankings, the effects on profitability can often be disastrous. Any SEO specialist worth their salt will be able to tell you that quick fixes and short term strategies simply do not work; typically while complying with the search engines may take a little longer, the results will be more worthwhile. To most people the way search engines actually work is still a mystery. SEO specialists apart from those who work for the search engines are typically best placed to understand the algorithms and the ways in which rankings are compiled. Fundamentally search engines do not search every single website in the world when they are looking for results, instead they use a database of websites that have links all over the web, it is through this method that the most relevant websites can be found for any particular search term. Relevancy is a key issue in the world of SEO. Fundamentally for a website to rank highly in any search engines it needs to be relevant to particular search terms. For instance, a site devoted to information about MP3 players is likely to rank highly. This however is a simplistic approach, there are many more factors to the compilation of rankings that purely relevancy, in most cases, factors such as links and uniqueness of content are also important. This is why when involved in the SEO process it is so important to select the right keywords for a website. As an example, the MP3 website would probably have to choose keywords like MP3 player, music player and portable MP3. Then these keywords would be used on the website and would also be placed in off screen information and in links. It is only through the combined effort of all of these elements that high rankings for any of these key terms will become a possibility. However brief, this article has attempted to give an insight into the world of SEO. It is a process that can achieve brilliant results in terms of increased online trade. It is important though to utilise trustworthy and ethical SEO specialists if the effects of optimisation are to be long lasting and worthwhile. This is why it is always advisable to use expert services with a good reputation in the industry.
