Step 1.

The most important place to start is understanding exactly what your audience wants - and expects - to hear. Once you know what topic you will be speaking on, this is easily discovered from your initial research. It really isn't cheating to go and ask a few people who have an interest in the subject what questions they would like answered or what aspect is most important to them. Browse through the search engines or borrow books on the subject from your local library - you'll soon get an idea of what is in your audience's minds.

Step 2.

Secondly, you need to build an easy rapport with the members of your audience. This is not as difficult as you might assume and can easily be achieved by making sure that you smile frequently during your speech and are not afraid to make eye contact. Take the opportunity to greet some members of the audience personally as they arrive and before you are due to begin speaking. Doing this will make them feel that they already know you before you are formally introduced to the audience as a whole. Very few public speakers do this and miss an important opportunity to get the audience 'on-side' right from the outset.

Step 3.

Make sure that you use language that people will understand. Be sure to use words that are appropriate to your topic and will demonstrate a shared knowledge with your audience but beware of over-using jargon as it may go over their heads and make you appear to be too much of a show-off.

Step 4.

Make your speech for your audiences' satisfaction and fulfillment - not yours. Deliver as many benefits to them as you can and make sure that you satisfy as many wants from the following list as possible. Any audience wants to be informed, entertained, educated, emotionally or spiritually fulfilled or to be shown how to gain some financial or health advantage. Provide a solution to a problem they may have and they will love you for it.

Relax and appear confident on stage.

It is a surprising truth that your audience will mirror what you project on stage, so if you are embarrassed, uneasy or hesitant in your manner, they will sub-consciously be feeling the same. If you appear at ease and relaxed during your presentaion, then they will relax too. So, if you are giving out signals that you are comfortable in their presence, have respect and affection for them and appreciate their attention, then they will do the same for you - without realising exactly why they are feeling warm and appreciative towards you.
